ISRO launching Mars Orbiter Mission on November 5

The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) would be launched at 2.36 pm on November 5 aboard PSLV-C25 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said Tuesday. The decision was taken following a meeting of ISRO officials earlier in the day.

The MOM was to originally launch on October 28 but the ISRO deferred it on October 19 after Nalanda, one of the two Shipping Corporation of India ships that will track the PSLV, failed to reach its specified location near the Fiji Islands due to poor weather in the South Pacific Ocean.

The ships-Yamuna and Nalanda-are now positioned in the South Pacific Ocean. The ISRO has set an October 28 to November 19 window for the launch. These are the days when Mars would be closest to earth, an occurrence that will repeat only after 780 days.

NASA is incidentally set to launch its latest Mars orbiter Maven on November 18.
ISRO officials said PSLV-C25 and the spacecraft carrying the 15-kg Mars Orbiter were in good health. "The integration of the spacecraft with the launcher PSLV-C25 is completed and the heat shield closure activity is also completed," ISRO director of publicity D P Karnik said.

The preparations now move towards fuelling of the launch vehicle and final checks.

Work done at ISRO centres around the country on the 1,343-kg spacecraft, the workhorse PSLV and five science instruments on the mission converged at Sriharikota on October 3 to bring the Rs 450-crore Mangalyaan Mission into its final stages.

Eye of God pictured in space


European astronomers have taken a stunning photo of a Big Brother-style cosmic eye, nicknamed the Eye of God, staring down from space.

The bright blue pupil and the white of the eye are fringed by flesh-colored eyelids - but this eye is so big that it light takes two and a half years to cross from one side to the other.

The object is actually a shell of gas and dust that has been blown off by a faint central star. Our own solar system will meet a similar fate five billion years in the future.

It lies around 700 light-years away in the constellation of Aquarius, and can be dimly seen in small backyard telescopes by amateur astronomers who call it the Helix nebula. It covers an area of sky around a quarter the size of the full moon.

The photo was taken with a giant telescope at the European Southern Observatory, high on a mountain top at La Silla in Chile. It is so detailed that a close-up reveals distant galaxies within the central eyeball.

Possibility of continents and oceans on Venus


In a new research, scientists have claimed to detect evidence for granite highlands on Venus in data almost two decades old, which suggests that the planet may have once been far more like Earth, with oceans and continents.

According to a report in Nature News, the data includes nighttime infrared emissions coming from the surface of Venus, which was detected by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft in 1990.

Analyzing these data, an international team led by planetary scientist George Hashimoto, now at Okayama University, Japan, found that Venus’s highland regions emitted less infrared radiation than its lowlands.

One interpretation of this lower infrared emission from the highlands, according to the authors, is that they are composed largely of ‘felsic’ rocks, particularly granite. Granite, which on Earth is found in continental crust, requires water for its formation.

Dirk Schulze-Makuch, an astrobiologist at Washington State University in Pullman said: “This is the first direct evidence that early in the history of the Solar System, Venus was a habitable planet with plenty of water. The question is how long Venus remained habitable. But this gives new impetus for the search for microbial life in Venus’s lower atmosphere.

According to Kevin Baines, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, Before Galileo, researchers had believed that only radar could see through the dense clouds of sulphuric acid in Venus’s atmosphere to the surface. Detecting the surface in the infrared is a breakthrough.

The possible presence of granite also suggests that tectonic plate movement and continent formation may have occurred on Venus, as well as recycling of water and carbon between the planet’s mantle and atmosphere.

According to geophysicist Norm Sleep of Stanford University in California, the implication of continent formation is “quite significant”. Venus might have once been almost entirely underwater, although without further geochemical data, we don’t know whether this early ocean’s temperature was 30 degree Celsius or 150 degree Celsius.

Nowadays, the planet is a paragon of the uninhabitable, with an atmosphere of 96 percent carbon dioxide and a surface temperature of around 460 degrees C. Any life on Venus that hadn’t figured out how to colonize the cloud tops a billion years after the planet’s formation would have been in big trouble.

Venus moves closer to Sun

Planet Venus will now move closer to the Sun, making it appear brighter in the night sky.

Science Popularization Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) president Chander Bhushan Devgun said: “Venus was at its maximum elongation on Thursday on the day of Makar Sankranti, and now will move closer to the Sun”.

Elongation is an astronomical term which refers to the angle between the Sun and a planet as viewed from the Earth. When a planet is visible after sunset, it is near its greatest eastern elongation. When it is visible before sunrise, it is near its greatest western elongation.

The value of the greatest elongation for Venus is between 45 and 47. This value varies because the orbits of the planets are elliptical, rather than perfect circles. Also, the variation can be attributed to the inconsistency in orbital inclination. That is, each planet's orbit is in a slightly different plane. The silvery planet is "up" for more than three hours after sunset now-a-days.

NASA gives space cargo contracts

NASA(The National Aeronautics and Space Administration), has give a contract of USD 3.5 billion in contracts to start-up companies on to deliver cargo to the International Space Station after the US space shuttles are retired. Aerospace giants Lockheed and Boeing are failed to get this.

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), a Hawthorne, California-based company headed by PayPal founder Elon Musk, and Dulles, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp are due to start cargo shipments to and from the space station beginning in 2010.

The USD 100-billion orbital outpost -- being assembled in stages with modules for living and research -- is a joint project by the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan and European nations.

NASA decided to use a commercial contractor for deliveries rather than relying on the Russian Progress cargo vehicles, which help deliver supplies to the space station.

Russia will transport US astronauts to and from the station on its Soyuz capsules after the shuttles are retired in 2010. The proposed shuttle replacement will not be ready to fly until about 2015.

These commercial carriers will carry about 40 to 70 percent of our cargo to space station," NASA's associate administrator for space flight. SpaceX and Orbital Sciences beat out a Chicago-based consortium called PlanetSpace that included three of the U.S. space agency's prime contractors -- Lockheed Martin Corp, Boeing Co and Alliant Techsystems Inc.

SpaceX's contract is for 12 flights for USD 1.6 billion, while Orbital will make up to eight flights for USD 1.9 billion.

Both companies had previously been awarded NASA contracts, worth a combined $500 million, to develop their orbital cargo delivery systems.

SpaceX plans to launch from a complex it built at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, beside the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Orbital plans to fly from NASA's Wallops Island facility in Virginia.

Galaxy's gigantic star discovered

Canadian scientists have discovered the hugest star so far in the Galaxy. Researchers from Montreal University in alliance with an international team of astrophysicists; have found that the super-large star has a weight 116 times that of the sun.The researchers has discovered the super-massive star in the company of yet another massive star whose mass is also 89 times that of the sun.These two massive stars form a binary system, with the lighter star waltzing around its heavier companion. They have a rotation period of 3.77 days.

Located in the massive star cluster NGC 3603 of the Milky Way, the super-massive two-star binary system has been named A1, a university statement said. NGC 3603 (entry number 3603 of the New General Catalogue) is a giant cloud of gas and plasma which is several hundred light years across and lies in the Constellation Carina in the Milky Way. It is about 20,000 light years from the sun.

The statement said the masses of these massive stars were calculated by a combination of observations made with the SINFONI (spectrometer for infra-red faint field imaging) instrument on the Very Large Telescope at the European Organization for Astronomical Research centre in Chile, and infrared images coming from the Hubble Space Telescope. The two stars are so massive and bright that the light they transmit shows characteristics that only Wolf-Rayet stars possess.
